Minister's Prayer for The Day of the Dead: "This Is My Blessing"
©2006 Rev. Thomas Perchlik
Inspired by an anonymous poem.
This is my blessingWhen I die if you need to weep
Cry for those who walk the streets beside you;
Care for the trees, and the sobbing river.
And if you need me then put your arms around someone nearAnd give them what I gave you.
I want to give you
a blessing,
Something better than words.Look for me in the people I've known
And loved;
Let me live in your eyes and handsbeyond the mind.
Let me be more than memory;let me be hard questions asked, and undying curiosity,
and wonder at things I have never seen.When I die love me, when hands touch hands,
In laughter at little jokes;
Love me by holding children closetelling them stories,
and by letting them go when they need to be free.Love doesn't die because people do.
So when I die
share me with others, for all that endures of me,
past remembered phrases and foolish moments,
will be love.
